The max quasi-independent set Problem

چکیده
In this paper, we deal with the problem of finding quasi-independent sets in graphs. This problem is formally defined in three versions, which are shown to be polynomially equivalent. The one that looks most general, namely, f -QIS, consists of, given a graph and a non-decreasing function f , finding a maximum size subset Q of the vertices of the graph, such that the number of edges in the induced subgraph is less than or equal to f(|Q|). For this problem, we show an exact solution method that runs within time O(2 d−27/23 d+1 n) on graphs of average degree bounded by d. For the most specifically defined γ-QIS and k-QIS problems, several results on complexity and approximation are shown, and greedy algorithms are proposed, analyzed and tested.

Complexity of the robust weighted independent set problems on interval graphs
This paper deals with the max-min and min-max regret versions of the maximum weighted independent set problem on interval graphs with uncertain vertex weights. Both problems have been recently investigated by Nobibon and Leus (2014), who showed that they are NP-hard for two scenarios and strongly NP-hard if the number of scenarios is a part of the input. In this paper, new complexity and approx...
متن کاملExtending the Max Algorithm for maximum independent set
The maximum independent set problem is an NP-hard problem. In this paper, we consider Algorithm MAX, which is a polynomial time algorithm for finding a maximal independent set in a graph G. We present a set of forbidden induced subgraphs such that Algorithm MAX always results in finding a maximum independent set ofG. We also describe two modifications of Algorithm MAX and sets of forbidden indu...
متن کاملOn the approximability of robust spanning tree problems
In this paper the minimum spanning tree problem with uncertain edge costs is discussed. In order to model the uncertainty a discrete scenario set is specified and a robust framework is adopted to choose a solution. The min-max, min-max regret and 2-stage min-max versions of the problem are discussed. The complexity and approximability of all these problems are explored. It is proved that the mi...
متن کاملA Global Regularization Method for Solving the Finite Min-Max Problem
In this paper, we present a method for solving the nite nonlinear min-max problem. By using quasi-Newton methods, we approximately solve a sequence of diierentiable subproblems where, for each subproblem, the cost function to minimize is a global regularization underestimating the nite maximum function. We show that every cluster point of the sequence generated is a stationary point of the min-...
متن کاملQuasi-P versus P
This report studies problems coming from three di erent domains of theoretical computer science: Clique versus Independent set in communication complexity, the Alon-SaksSeymour conjecture in graph coloring and the stubborn problem in constraint satisfaction problem. Each problem admits a quasi-polynomial size solution, meaning of size n where n is the parameter, and the problem is to nd a polyn...
متن کاملMessage Passing for Max-weight Independent Set
We investigate the use of message-passing algorithms for the problem of finding the max-weight independent set (MWIS) in a graph. First, we study the performance of loopy max-product belief propagation. We show that, if it converges, the quality of the estimate is closely related to the tightness of an LP relaxation of the MWIS problem. We use this relationship to obtain sufficient conditions f...
